CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Discovery Language Programs offers 12 to 22 week sessions in Spanish, French, German, Italian and Polish to students in Grades K-8. Class sizes range from 8-14 students that are grouped by age and level of foreign language knowledge. Students usually meet once a week, before or after school or at lunchtime. Twice weekly classes are also available. To determine the interest level at your school, an eight-week pilot program can be offered at any time during the school year.

Discovery Language Programs offers six different levels of Spanish, and French; 5 levels of Polish, and two levels of Italian and German.

Students receive workbooks and audiotapes or CD's that are mostly used as home reinforcement.

The following are some of the subjects covered the first year:
Numbers and Colors, Days of the Week, Months of the Year, Family, Descriptive Adjectives, Pets and Farm Animals, House, Cultural aspects of Mexico, France, Germany, Italy or Poland, Food, Clothing, Marketplace, Shopping, School, Parts of the Body, Sports and Leisure Activities and Auxiliary Verbs
(older students only).

Students advancing further in the program will learn about transportation, telling time, expressing feelings and physical situations, seasons and weather, vacations, emergency situations and cultural study of Spain/South America, West Africa/Canada, Austria/Switzerland, Italy or Poland.

Rules of grammar such as construction of singular/plural, negative and interrogative, prepositions and commonly used verbs are not stressed specifically, but students are taught the concepts deductively, in a natural way.

Workbook number 4&5, designed for students who have completed three or four years of the Discovery Language Programs, offers much more reading and writing than the previous workbooks. This level is an excellent preparation for further language learning either in Junior High School or in High School.
